Wednesday we used the chrome books to practice and learn the common core standards that we are currently studying regarding irrational numbers. We went to the Chrome Store to add an app to our google accounts. The application was called Buzzmath. Students worked on squares and square roots and the website marked each persons progress. Students did a great job working on solving equations related to square roots. Afterward, they took a screenshot of their progress and submitted it to me, using "Submit an Assignment" from my website. Finally, we worked on finding the square roots of the numbers from 1 to 20. Each student was responsible for the 5 from Monday's assignment and 5 more from Wednesday.
Thursday started with Big 10 round 4 day 2. Then, we collaborated with the different groups and found all of the square roots of the numbers from 1 to 20. We also learned about how to estimate square roots of non-perfect squares quickly in order to compare problems with these irrational numbers using less than (<), greater than (>), or equal to (=). This work we did together from the "Irrational Numbers" packet 1-6 that I handed out on Monday. We did p. 24 in the packet together as a class. There was no homework. Finally, we checked our answers to the square roots of the numbers from 1 to 20 by using the website, Cram. The link is found on this website under the Math 8 page. I dated it October 8, 2014. Students used their answers to play "Jewels of Wisdom" and then submitted a screenshot of their results. Unfortunately, section 3 did not get to play this game due to Charter internet being knocked out. Hopefully, that's not going to happen often!
